My wife and I are visiting the Big Island from 9/12 - 9/19. Our preference is to stay at Marriott Hotels since I have gold status. The best deal that I could find is on Orbitz for 7 nights at the Waikoloa Marriott plus Car Rental for $900.00 (originally $1100 minus $200 using online promotion code). The downside is I don't collect any Marriott points and an upgrade is questionable at best.
I'd really prefer to book directly with Marriott but their lowest rate is $185 per night. Can we suggest an alternate, better price for the Marriott? Otherwise, can you suggest an alternate hotel package for around $900?
Assuming you are staying on the Kona side of the island, check out condos in VRBO .com. The Marriott (and most other major chains) on the Kona side are in Waikoloa, which is a drive from Kona, and there is often traffic - and they all now charge resort fees. We like to stay closer to Alii Drive, where you will find most of the restuarants, bars, night life, shopping, and MUCH easier access to most of the nicer beaches, marina, etc. There should be plenty of nice 1 br 1 ba units for less than $100 per night this time of year, and it should be possible to negotiate the rate, cleaning fee for a last minute rental.
if you are looking for a private home on the shore on Hilo side PM me.. I stayed at one and loved it...its owned privately with a helipad, swimming pool and all that..

1. You didn't mention how many points you have. Since Marriott has the 5th night free with point redemption, it may not be a bad option to do 5 nights with points and other nights in cash. Category changes to 6 from 5 on 9/21 - so good opportunity to beat that increase! [+ resort fee is optional when staying on points].
2. They have Marriott rewards membership rate of $172. It says - membership card required - not sure what that means since I trash those membership cards. Note: Marriott seems to have a $20 per night resort fee. Fee pays for parking, internet access and 1/2 day snorkeling and unlimited calls to USA/Canada.
We stayed at the Hilton. Loved the place - huge pool including waterslide. Being Hilton Gold helped to get a great room too.
