My husband and I are both members in Spirit Air's $9 Fare Club. We were flying separately, so it was necessary. Our membership expires midnight tonight.
My question: Is there any advantage to continuing Spirit membership from year to year? Or should I just cancel and purchase another membership the next time I need to buy a ticket from Spirit?
Please note I purchased 3 tickets from Spirit for upcoming travel on 9/10 (1 for me) and 10/18 (1 for me, 1 for husband).
I've read every paragraph of Spirit's membership guide, but can't find the answer.
Honestly, I have been a member with them in the past with no problems, but now that they are charging for carry-on bags I chose NOT to renew with them this past June due to this. Just getting out of hand! When you do the math they aren't cheaper, and if they are, it's only by a few bucks which isn't worth the headache of flying with Spirit! Everything is great as long as nothing goes wrong with your flight, however, if you have ANY travel hiccups with your flights (delays, cancelled flights, strikes, etc) you can believe it will be a nightmare!
I canceled it...there seems to be no advantage to keeping it (until I need to fly again). I understand the risks of traveling via Spirit--did a lot of research before buying membership. I don't fly Spirit for business or anything important (like a wedding), so if there is a delay, it won't be such a big deal. I paid $40 for membership because it was the cheapest way to fly from FLL to LAX, even including the $40 fee. That was $155 RT for FLL t LAX, including tax fee & 1-yr membership. Day before it expired, I booked FLL to LGA for $54 RT, total. So far, I've flown Spirit twice...no problems, just an uncomfortable plane (like others). I'm mailing clothes to my Mom in LA...cheaper than carry on fee. It's worth it to me cuz I have more time than money. Thanks, all!
I'm sorry this is too late for your keep or renew decision, but I am new to this forum and just reading this now. I hope you canceled bothmemberships. Besides all the negative experiences with Spirit posted here (which I wholly agree with), if you do the math, there is not reason to keep the membership unless you fly every month someplace on them. When you do want to fly, their website shows you what a $9 club member would pay for a particular flight, and offers you the opportunity to buy a membership at that time. FURTHERMORE, unless they changed their policy from the past, there is no reason to buy separate memberships for both you and your husband if you both will be flying together, since when making a reservation as a member, you simply choose "2" seats instead of one, enter both names when asked, and both seats are reserved at the $9 Club member price. (or at least that is how it used to work) I hope this is the perspective you were looking for and is helpful to others.
