I finally got around to replacing my old tube television. I thought Sony ps3 plays all games back in 1080. However the television is showing 780. Im using a HDMI cable. Playing a game called bad company. Anyone know why ps3 isnt playing it back in 1080?
it depends on the game itself, i think very few games are actually 1080, the hardware can certainly decode and output 1080 but the game must be written that way also, i doubt you could see much difference anyway

Some 720p sets will advertise being able to accept 1080i signals, but downscale the image to 720p.
For PS3, the vast majority of games are 720p. Some will upscale to 1080i or 1080p, but this isn't "true" resolution, and is the same as what a 1080p TV does to a 720p signal anyway.
For a lot more info on the native resolutions of PS3 games, as well as a list of what resolutions each game support, you can check this link here: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241
As that link shows, Battlefield: Bad Company is 720p (1280x720).

Most games are in 720. But to play back at 1080, you need to go to your system settings. From there you can select 480(?), 720, and 1080. Games and movies should automatically play in highest settings after you complete setup.
