AVG 4.5 star camera reviews over at Amzn based on 408 reviews. camel shows this to be a solid $20 bucks lower than usual

2GB SD cards aren't even worth keeping around anymore, considering you can get a 2pack of 4GBs for $10 or an 8GB for $15.

Green for the camera though, despite the worthless pack-in.

Great camera- Bought from Amazon on thanksgiving for slightly lower price. Quality of video is fantastic.

Bought Canon refurb last week from Adorama for about $150 +SH -BCB. ($199 new, free shipping) Got 4GB class 6 SDhc from onsale.com for $20 shipped.

It's a great little camera...very clear pics even in subpar lighting. If all you need is an auto snapper when u go out, this is great.

I'm glad that I went with the SD780 since it's a great photo camera as well as decent *pocket* HD video camera (at least as good if not better than the Flip Mino and the like).

So is this IN STORE only? I do not see an 'add to cart' button on the product page on the Costco website. Thanks...

No item number or add to cart.

When you shoot HD video, can you use zoom as normal? If yes, can it focus fast enough during zoom in/out?

No, the optical zoom is fixed during video recording. There is digital zoom, but that is pretty lame.... The camera doesn't do a bad job of focusing during video.. and i agree with other posters...the video quality is impressive....though it's somewhat hard to hold such a small camera still.

An annoying thing about these Canon Powershots is that their model numbers don't leave any clue as to which one's more expensive or feature-rich. They got SD1300 and SD1200 cheaper than SD780. SD1400 is more expensive than SD780 but then there are DS900's that are more expensive than SD1400. And then there is that SD 3500 which is lower priced than the highest 900's. Why can't they just name their products serially based on prices and features? Everytime these Powershots deal comes along, I'm forced to go back to refresh my memory by referring to Canon product pages..

Dead? Don't see add to cart.

FYI...............these SD780's are made in China now...............

Bought one of these and took it back. The low light pictures are terrible, so much noise reduction that it smears all the detail. If you are a casual shooter you might be happy with this but there are much better choices for the same $. If you are a pixel peeper, RUN........

I got SD780 from WalMart for $150 after bing around Thanksgiving. Nice little camera. I noticed that on Auto setting, when inside in tends to switch to higher ISO instead of firing the flash. When inside switch to manual, set ISO to 200, flash to always and results will be good. Love 720p video on this tiny camera!

You sure you have looked at yours zoomed in at 100%? I have 3 other canon P&S cameras and have owned probably 8. This was the worst of the bunch.

This may be not best P&S camera out there but it is good enough for a price and camera being so tiny. Why care how 12MP picture looks at 100% zoom if you are not going to print 3x4 feet pictures out of it? It does what it supposed to do for a camera of this size, picture samples are here linky-dinky

I picked up the Panasonic Lumix ZR1 for this price during Costco's sale last month. It's been a great cam, high quality pics and speedy snapping time even with flash on. Low light is ok, maybe slightly above average, but small digicams aren't going to be great low-light performers. How does the Canon SD780 stack up? Anyone have a direct comparison? Wondering whether I should exchange it.

ok i know you cannot zoom during video recording. But can you zoom before recording to where you want and then press record? Is there digital zoom during record?

I would love to see some comparison of this with mino ultraHD for videos.

this have optical image stabilizer, does that work during video? If so, wouldn't that be a huge advantageover the mino?
(I have a creative vado hd, quality is great if you are absolutely still, but lack of image stabilizer is it's biggest downfall).

I got ZR1 from costco last month also. I think both ZR1 and Sd780 are good camera. I like ZR1 better, which has 8X optical zoom, slightly wider lens. if you care about size, SD780 is a little smaller.

I want to get that canon camera that is child sized for my gf. Is it this one or the 1120? CONFUSING.

If someone were buying their first digital camera, then yes, this is an ok start, BUT there are better cameras at the same price. What is WORSE is there are lots of people here and IRL that see this camera as an upgrade to what they already have, and that it is not. Lots of people say not to look at the pictures zoomed to 100%, but why not? That data is taking up space on my drives, so I want to see what it is. If I take my "crappy old" 6.3mp camera and zoom it to 150%, it looks BETTER than the output of that 12mp camera. And it takes less space.

So what I'm saying is don't get caught up in a "good deal" only to find out this camera does not perform as well as the one you have.

if you worry about it taking up space then don't set it to 12 mp. I never use higher than 6 mp on any of my cameras, don't ever see the need to blow a pic to life size poster. When are camera manufacturers going to stop the MP race? At a certain point it doesn't matter, and starts to degrade other things like low light sensitivy.

With that said, strong points of this camera is the small size and DECENT picture quality, along with supposedly DECENT HD video quality, so it might replace carrying a Flip HD and a camera. But that's where i am trying to get more info on this camera.

Yes, you can (digital) zoom before recording and then press record. However, I would NOT recommend using the digital zoom during video recording. The first time that I tried using digitally zoomed video, there was much pixelation and blockiness. The preview might look great on the little 3" screen, but once the video is on the flat screen in the living room, the pixelation/blockiness due to the digital zoom makes it look really bad.

Also, image stabilization is available for video recordings. Works sufficiently for quick home videos e.g. kids' sports, school performances (assuming that you're close enough and don't need to zoom), etc. I'll edit this post when I get a chance to post some sample vids on YouTube/Vimeo.

edit: Here are some YouTube videos that were taken with the SD780 (shot by others not me).

The picture quality for this camera varies from "very good" to "excellent." Yes, in low light, it will struggle, as will every other camera in this class by every other manufacturer. For outdoor shots, it will dazzle you.

Keep in mind you are buying an untraportable camera, and that is its main selling point. If you're looking something with better zoom/low light/etc, Canon has an entire other line of cameras for that. This is a camera that you won't hesitate to carry around with you all the time, or take on a beach. I have this camera, and love it, mainly because it lets met get photos I would never get otherwise simply because it's always in my bag.

I think a camera like this, paired with whatever level DSLR you can afford, is the ideal mix. This is not the camera I would turn to for once-in-a-lifetime shots. But, I have snapped several of those using this, simply because it was in my pocket in a place where I would never have taken my $1400 DSLR.

How does this compare to the SD960 that was on sale at Best Buy for $199.00 last week?

Looks like only red in stock now.

I am not at all impressed by the video on canon's point and shoot models...and that video was a good example, very poor light management, muddy picture, etc. Panasonic is really killing them on 720p video quality even from their waterproof models.

As for still photos I feel Canon point and shoot cannot be beat with far less noise and management of noise compared to the panasonics which seem to be the only worthy competitor.

Overall I'd say go with the panasonic though, why?
1) bigger zooms and wide format lens
2) better video particularly 720p
3) when you take a 12mp picture it will look good on most monitors and definitely 8"x10" photos from either camera, sure the canon will look better with far less noise at larger sizes but if that is what you are interested in get the canon or ideally get an SLR or micro 4/3rds

I'm not sure if we're viewing the same video (Canon SD780 Demo 1 by deiter26 on YouTube). I just viewed the 720p HD version of the video on the 40" flat-panel in the living room, and the video did NOT look "muddy" nor was there "very poor light management" at least to my untrained eyes. It looked like a nice beach somewhere on the Pacific. The audio isn't going to win any awards, but I don't expect it to at this price point.

Educate me, and please explain what was "muddy" about the picture and what exactly demonstrated "very poor light management" in the video?

BTW, which Panasonic models would you recommend over the Canon SD780? But once you start suggesting getting an SLR or micro 4/3rd camera, you're no longer talking about a camera that you can (comfortably) slide into a pant pocket which is one of the selling points of the Canon SD780.

He may be referring to low light video and motion stabilization. The Panasonic ZR1 (previous Costco deal @ this price) records very good quality video even in medium light. Outdoors with alot of light, any cam will give you decent performance.

I got this for my ex and we did not like it. I got her the SD1200 instead. It is a better camera imo, especially in low light. The SD780 had a lot of trouble acquiring an image and auto focusing in low light..

still available in store in so calif. $179

Amazon just dropped the price to $189, with free shipping. So if you live in an Amazon no-tax state, that may end up being cheaper. (You don't get the 2 gig memory card with Amazon, of course. But you're going to want a bigger card than that for this camera anyway.)

It's 179 on Amazon with free shipping now.

I bought this camera from Amazon, and it's spectacular... awesome picture quality, amazing HD movies, and the size is TINY.

Is this based on first hand experience, because I disagree about the zr-1. I just bought one and the hd video was noticeably darker than anything i have used which includes creative vado hd, kodak z950, and canon sd800 (although it is sd video). The video from the zr-1 shows little noise in indoor lighting but it is way too dark. I even turned on iExposure and it didn't do a thing, as if the automatic exposure is broken. perhaps they can fix this with firmware upgrade, mine is at version 1.0.

I really like the hd video of the kodak z950 except it is constantly focusing and refocusing giving the movie a blurry look most of the time. ZR-1 doesn't have this problem but is too dark. Wonder how the sd780 video does in these respect.

good deal

Costco now showing this at $169.99 plus the SD card.

The PowerShot SD4000 IS is their newest I believe. I've had it in my cart on Amazon for a while now but am waiting for some reviews.
