I cannot find this on their web site...

I received the Microcenter monthly flyer today. They have a Magellan Roadmate 2200T (refurb) for $59. This is a better deal than the 1200 deal I posted last weekend.

It has TTS, media player and other features. You can't beat that for great reviews:

Put refurb in the title, or put on your asbestos suit.

I don't follow.

TITLE - in store?? - What store?? - belongs in title

Change the title to "Microcenter has Magellan Roadmate 2200T $59 In Store Only (refurb. The GPS not the store)" or put on your asbestos suit, and thanks for the morning laugh.

Looks like this GPS was made in 2006!
Oh and it is on Micro Center's website:
Magellan 2200T Refurb

I just returned from the store with one and it got me home
Speaker is very loud, screen is bright, spoken voice is very natural. When it says the street names it's computer generated, but it's still understandable. It doesn't appear to tell you what time you will reach your destination, but it does tell you the miles and such. I'm impressed so far... Oh it did have 2006 maps on it but I'll get that updated. Even so good deal.

Just called Magellan about updates for this, and the latest map update they will give, or have available for this unit, is 2006! They will only send this if they nick you for $10.00, and only then if you jump through other hoops. Included in the update is the ability to buy and install topographic maps. Don't know how much these are. They said NONE of the units are upgraded. So for $10.00, the latest maps that can be installed are 2006.

Yup, that's the problem with buying Magellan refurb units. They always seem to have ancient maps on the things.

Magellan's a pain in the butt for updated maps. Their customer service is a pain and their website's very counter-intuitive.

When my Magellan got stolen I replaced it with a cheapie refurbed Garmin, haven't had anything to complain about.
YMMV, just my anecdotal evidence for the day.

With no useful updates available unfortunately.

You can do better for the money these days. These actually were pretty decent little units for what they were. Great reception and battery life and they're fairly rugged and weather resistant. The main advantage in their time was that they could be upgraded to what they called their "Crossover" version which gave you road, off-road, and marine functions. I still use mine in an old truck and as a back up on my boat. They'd need to get down to the $25 range with the upgrade before I'd think about it now though.

FYI I picked one up at MC yesterday. It was $59. The 1200 model is $49. I was able to perform 2 firmware upgrades on it and a map update to V2. The GPS is very hackable too as it has Windows CE on it. So you can change it to a media player (MIO). The update I performed improved the GUI interface greatly. Here is what I love about it:

* Boots very fast!
* Voice is very good
* Battery live is unbelieveable 8-12hrs. Garmin is 2-4hrs if you are lucky.
* Gets a GPS signal almost instantly even when cold booted.
* Good MP3 player.
* SD support
* It's waterproof!
* The free upgrade gets you crossover which makes the GPS act as a marine GPS and a pedestrian/hiking mode.

You can't go wrong. Previous poster you can't get more for your money for $60 believe me I have waited for a while now.

Returning my Garmin 765T. The only thing it has over this is free traffic and bluetooth and both didn't work well anyway.

PS G00gle "Magellan 2200T hack". With an extra firmware update I was able to upgrade it to a 2500T not to mention all the other goodies.

Are all these updates related to the maps also? Would love to see some links, PM is fine
Thanks a bunch.

I use Deamon tools to install.

Then apply this firmware to upgrade this gps from a 2200T to a 2500T. That allows you to access the SD card.

I did update the splashscreen and install the FilemanCE and backup my unit and tool with a few things.
I have not been able to update the Spring 2009 maps or POI successfully yet but for $60 I'm not complaining. When this unit is outdated beyond belief I'll get another $60 one. That's called smart. Buying the latest and greatest is not.

Magellan is junk. Just Google Magellan complaints. Buy anything but....

On the contrary I did that before I purchased and I was impressed with its reviews:

Googled "Magellan 2200T review" and these are the first two that come up...

4 out of 5 stars. The only bad thing said about it was some of the screens were sluggish. I owned 3 Garmins and they did the same thing. This thing boots and locates a sat quicker than any GPS I have seen.

Another 4 out of 5
http://gpsmagazine.com/2006/12/magellan_roadmate_2200t_review.ph...

If anything I have lost confidence in Garmin. The last three I tried had major issues. i.e. 765T is ok but bluetooth is so so and touch screen is unbelieveably innacurate. This Magellan has yet to lock up on me. One time it recalculated the route again when I was driving home, but it wasn't a issue. Try doing your homework next time instead of blind statements.
