This is the first time I've seen these sold as refurbished units on Apple Store. Prices are $1699 (i5) and $1849 (i7), about 15% below regular, new unit prices. Apple refurbished unit carry full warranty and are basically new.

I'd put my money on them being fixed. With AAPL's stock soaring to GOOG and BRK.A notoriety, AAPL will not knowingly sell defective junk.

If they do have any issues, Apple will replace them now that it is a known problem. Somewhat related: I bought a 27" iMac (core2duo) a few weeks ago from Microcenter with cracked screen corner (another "known" problem) for $1300, took it to Apple Store and they replaced the glass no questions asked. I have to say they are very good at customer service, but you certainly pay for it.

Honestly the most they can shoot for is GOOG like pricing, but with the "can do no wrong" label being placed on AAPL, they are a rouge stock nowadays. Not an BRK.A caliber at all, but showing all the potential. This company is so strong it's not even funny.
I hate to break it to you stock investors, comparing BRK.A with AAPL. Stock price doesn't mean anything. It's all about market cap. BRK.A = $194B and AAPL = $198B.
Also BRK.(A|B) has a net income of $5B where as AAPL's net income is $7B.

They are comparable because both Steve Jobs and Warren Buffet are geniuses that's one of a kind of several decades. and unfortunately, both are going to die soon.

Ok, my only point was AAPL is a highly respected company and it's very doubtful they would knowingly resell defective iMacs...

Wow, didn't know that Apple's become a Red company - is that their company color or the symbol for its political leanings?

I got started with Apple Products 3 years ago buying a refurbished Mac Mini. Then I bought a refurbished AppleTV and later a refurbished Macbook Air. All three had to go back to the Apple Store for repairs. I've taken the refurb Macbook air back about 5 times already. Needless to say when I went and bought my new 27" I5 IMac, I bought it new and opened it in the store in the last week of December to see if it had the infamous yellowing problem in the screen. It didn't but I would hate to lug this thing back to the Apple Store to get fixed which is why I bought it new instead of refurbed.
These prices are really good on the Imacs but unless you live close to an Apple Store I would probably pass based on my experience. My time and patience is worth a lot to me but others not so much, so I could understand why most people would jump on this deal if they were in the market for one of these.

I've had the exact opposite experience. I spent more than 10 years burning through a steady stream of Dells, Gateways, H-Ps, Voodoos and several home-built systems. Except for an IBM ThinkPad that remains the longest-living computer I've ever owned, they all ended up on the junk heap sooner than it seems like they should have. Almost three years ago I decided to abandon the never ending graphics card/processor/hard drive rpm/etc arms race, and take the plunge and buy an iMac. Soon after I bought a MacBook. Both remain as nimble and awesome as the day I bought them. Despite heavy daily use, I honestly don't know that my Mac has EVER crashed to the point of requiring a restart. The OS is gorgeous and, more important, just makes sense. Yes, I had to let go of the high-end first-person shooters (though I still happily run the entire C&C and Civ series through Parallels). But two and a half years in, I have a Mac desktop and a Mac laptop that are nowhere near the end of their useful lives. And the two experiences I've had dealing with Apple's tech support -- once over an early problem with the laptop, the other over a stuck key on my iMac keyboard -- resulted in them apologizing profusely, replacing both instantly, and then even FOLLOWING UP with a phone call later to see if everything worked.
Yes, Macs cost more. Yes, PCs are far, far more powerful for the same amount of money. But at some point building/rebuilding/fixing computers becomes less fun than it once was, and you just want to sort of get on with your life and have machines that you know will be rock solid. For 20 years I was a PC, but barring some miracle from Microsoft, I think I'm a Mac from here on out.

I have been always on the PC side of the pc/mac debate.. Well I do not think PC is the problem, its microsoft's in ability to do anything right. They just plain suck, I really despise them... I am considering buying a mac b/c of all the BS I have gone through. The countless hours of frustration of dealing with random crap. I am done... I wish google had their own OS but mac it is... With the money and technology available, why doesn't microsoft dump their entire $hit OS and come up with something from the ground up... Its unbelievable Vista and Windows 7 are absolute POS's... (piece of $hit)
Well I do not like to say it but I have to get a mac b/c I need to get some work done. I am tired of everything locking up and not working in the long run with windows os's... Well enough of a rant. .Microsoft... You suck...

no idea what you guys are talking about. windows 7 is a dream. vista was just as fine.
google the 27" debacle. apple had to pay people to take these units back they had so many issues with screen. PAY the customers to take the computer back and get a refund.
might think long and hard on the 27"

99% of the problem is with the user. Macs use intel chipsets nowadays.. the only difference between a 'mac' and a 'pc' is mainly the operating system. And windows 7 is pretty darn good. Macs are good machines, but imo if you aren't doing video or photo editing professionally then you are wasting money buying mac over a pc.
