Amazon has Nikon D90 + Nikon 18-200mm VR II for about $1333 & Free shipping. It is not a pre-packaged thing. You have to add these items separately. This is an awesome deal in my opinion.
- Add Nikon D90 body to Cart - Go back to the Nikon D90 page where you see "Save $250 Instantly" in the middle of the page for the Nikon 18-200mm VR II lens - Select the Nikon 18-200mm VR II link and add that to Cart - Subtotal = $1,582.56 but $250 will be instantly deducted at Checkout!

I bought this item on 12/19/09 and the price was higher by $35. Would they lower their price if I call them? Anyone experience with Amazon price match.

Go for the 18-200. I have the 18-105 and it's a great kit lens, and def. the one I use most BUT I have to supplement it with the 55-200 VR (which I owned before I bought the D90). If the 55-200 VR was a fantastic lens I might not mind, but it's very mediocre especially at the upper ranges where clarity falls off. -- what else to expect for $250 (at the time). The 18-200 is a notch above the 55-200 in quality plus you don't have to burden yourself with changing lenses all the time. If I had had the choice of a discounted 18-200 when I bought my D90 I would have jumped.
Unfortunately, it appears this deal is now dead. I had the combo in my cart and it showed the $250 off. Today it is not there. The main page now shows a different lens. The previous page had the 18-200 lens and said it was good until Jan 2nd - so I thought I had some time to order. What a bummer. Is Amazon always this flaky?

Is it possible it's because Amazon ran out of the lens? The one I see is being sold by Cameta camera.
I think you are right - I did not realize they would change the page and put another lens on there. I am going to jump on the deal if it comes back.

Kept checking the 18-200mm VR2 page..it will sometimes shows up as either in stock or with eta of around 1/3/2010.. (if it showed up, check out quickly before it disappear again) Even though the D90 page now shows previous lens promo (70-300mm VR which expires 12/12/09), if you add the 18-200mm VR2 to the cart and checkout You will still get S250 off..

18-200mm lens back in stock with Amazon as of this moment...
Got it - Woo Hoo!! Thanks guys... I was really bummed. Incidentally, I checked with WolfCamera.com and they would not price match this deal - despite all the references to the contrary on their site.

Or you could do what I did and am very pleased with in terms of functionality - get the 18-105 kit lens, and add the 70-300mm to complement it on the long end. Great combo imo, and gives you more reach than the 18-200, with better picture quality. Of course the downside is that you have to switch lenses, but that has never been an issue with me personally. I pretty much know before I go shooting when I will need to have the 70-300 on the camera, vs. a 50mm prime, for instance.
I bought the D90 soon after it came out (and luckily right when Bing was giving 30% CashBack) and am still amazed at the shots I can get with it. Love the camera, and will keep it until it dies.

I added both 18-200mm VR2 and 70-300mm VR to my cart together w/ D90 and 18-105mm VR.. When I check out, both $200 and $250 off showed up and my final price was around $1,870.. Will decide whether to keep 18-105mm VR + 70-300mm VR or just the 18-200mm VR2..
Amazon has since took down the promo and 70-300mm VR is no longer available.. However, if you add 18-200mm VR2 to the cart with D90..you can still get $250 off..

This is exactly what I did. I bought both 70-300mm and 18-200mm. I am going to sell them for maybe $1100 and keep the D90+18-105mm kit. Received Camera and 18-200mm VRII today. 70-300mm still on back order.
70-300mm is not available thru Amazon anymore. I really wanted to get one but I don't if the discount will be still available when its back in stock.

The $250 discount also shows up if you are looking to buy the D300s with the 18-200mm.

$250 instant rebate is not showing on the Amazon page, but i just bought the combo: D90 + 18-200mm, and got the discount. Final total: $1289.94
the rebate won't show up until the very last page where you press the final button to "place the order".
Thanks for the info.! great deal!

Some updates:
Amazon cancelled the 70-300mm VR from my order as it is not available at this moment. But part of the $200 for this item was already applied - I think Amazon prorates the $450 ($250+$200) discount based on the price of all three items. So I got an even deeper discount. Better than they ship the 70-300mm.
Now my total for the other two items D90 with 8-105mm VR and 18-200mm VRII is around $1400. I already received all items and will keep the D90 18-105mm kit then Sell the 18-200mm for $700.
It's the best deal I got for year 2009.

No, they stopped that policy -quite- publicly over a year ago.

Ordered before Christmas and received two days ago.
If your item were shipped, you may just go ahead to cancel the item yourself after login since the item is not available. That's what they instructed me to do.

do both the camera and lens have to be in stock for me to get the discount? Not seeing the $250 instant discount at the check-out page. i did pick Amazon as the seller for both items.

I think the deal is dead. Tried yesterday and discount didn't show up.
sleepdragon said: Will decide whether to keep 18-105mm VR + 70-300mm VR or just the 18-200mm VR2..
Great, please post your opinion here when you get both. Curious to see what you think (though it will take you some time to get the feel for using them both)
I've been using the 18-200mm for a year now (had the 18-105mm and 70-300mm earlier) - I must admit that not having to carry a second lens (and swap it as needed) is very convenient. The Nikon 18-200mm is a pretty sharp fast lens - yes it does have some amount of barrel distortion at 18mm, but I haven't encountered it enough for it to be bothersome. You'll probably be able to sell the 18-200mm for a higher price though. HTH
My main reasoning for not going with the one solution 18-200 lens was not as much the apparently lesser PQ (compared to two, shorter lenses) as much as it was not having access to that 200-300mm range, which is awesome when you need it. When you DON'T need it, however, and are carrying it around...not so awesome. Although, in reality, all of these lenses we are talking about are RELATIVELY light weight, "consumer" level lenses, not heavy, fast glass, so weight/bulk is not really a big concern at this level, imho.
I got a D90 & 18-200mm VR2 for 1260 from Adorama, after BING (3%) , Credit card (1%) & Nikon Instant rebate. The deal is dead now, but I have a strong feeeling it will come back every few weeks based on the trend so far.
JR had a sweeter deal ($1240), but was dead before I could order.
I sold off the 18-200mm lens and kept the D90, so final price was $575 for the D90 Body only. I got the older generation 18-200mm for 450 bucks on eBay after CashBack. There is NO significant difference between the older and newer 18-200mm newer lenses except for the utterly useless zoom lock (that works only at 18mm) and you really don't need the zoom lock at 18mm as the creep occurs more at 30mm to 130mm range.
SCL677 said: Hey everyone, I can across this deal at J&R recently and this is by far the lowest price I can find for a Nikon D90 (camera body) plus the Nikon 70-300 mm (lens) for the price of 1,238.00 + Shipping.
Here is the breakdown of the charges: Nikon D90 (Camera Body) $849.00 Camera Len (Nikon 70-300mm) $389.00 Shipping: $4.01
