Just got off the phone with Canon Tech support. I called about an issue on my 3 year old Powershot S2-IS and was told about the Canon Loyalty program.

This program allows you to replace your current Canon camera with a Canon refurbished product. The refurbished unit carries a 6 month warranty. The following models are currently offered:

SD850 IS $150
G9 $250
EOS XT (with lens kit, same as this ) $275

Taxes extra, shipping is $10 for 2-day delivery. You must return your old / defective camera (must be a Canon). Prepaid shipping label will be provided.

Call Tech Support at 866-443-8002 or 800-828-4040 to get started.
You will need the serial number of your current camera.

Edit: Yes, I bought the XT for about $300 after taxes.

Updated by fwlogue - four easy steps and price update 9/17/2009
Updated by Shadow6934 - DSLR price update 2010-01-13

Customer Loyalty Program's direct number is 866-443-8002, option 2 for digital camera upgrades.

Also see excerpt of Canon Order Confirmation at the bottom of this summary.

In-stock orders cannot be modified or canceled! That said, here are the four easy steps:

1) Specify that you have a broken Canon XYZ camera and would like to know what the loyalty upgrade options are. They will try to transfer you to a technician, but you can tell them you just want to know the prices first and the rep can give them to you.

2) Once you are ready, call again. This time, you will get transfered to a technician, who will ask you to desribe the issues. They would verify that 1) it's broken* and 2) it's out of warranty (just say you've had it for a over a year). Then, he would ask for the broken camera's serial number, your name, phone, address and email.

(*TIP: if you specify water damage, e.g., it won't turn on after it got wet, they will accept it as broken for sure)

3) The technician will give you the prices as well, then transfer you back to the loyalty program rep, who will take your name, phone, address again as well as your credit card. You will get the order number.

Shipping options:
$10 2-business days
$20 1-business day

Plus state sales tax where applicable

4) Canon will ship you the replacement camera with Fedex signature required, along with a prepaid Fedex label and a box for you to ship your broken camera to them. You must ship it to them within 10 business days to avoid unreturned product fee. You only need to ship the camera body, so you can keep all accesories (batteries, charger, straps, etc.).

I got an A60 from like 6 years ago which is probably worth about 10 dollars now... you're telling me I could break it, send it in, and take my pick of one of those cameras?

So, were you able to get in on this deal?

rated:

IMO this is a decent deal only if you have a broken Canon.

The XT has been replaced twice (XTi and XSi), and can be found NEW for under $400 anyways.

I just broke the status panel of my G5. This seems to be perfect timing... Think I should trade it in?

Do you need to break it? It said "old/defective ...

thanks! I have a S2-IS that had a problem...many people had. out of warranty, shelved it and bought something else. Atleast I know I can some value back from it

For my PowerShot A40 I was offered:

An A550 (might have been 590) for $89.
An S1000 for $100.
An SX100 for $125.

I really wanted that G9 for $250.

Been meaning to upgrade my A40. Great camera that still takes nice pix. G9 would have been nice for $250.

This is a nice deal. The XT is a good entry-level DSLR, and, hey, if you outgrow it, upgrade it the next time Canon does this for the 40D

rated:

Those arent always your options, it depends on what you're sending in:

Heres what I got with a A60--

a560 - $89
sd1000 - $100
sx100 - $125

None of those are even worth getting.. oh well

Guy seemed to stress the broken part when I told him my A60 worked fine. I guess pull your hammers and microwaves out and start destroying your cameras.

you can still get the cheaper one and put CHDK hack on it. http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Yes, depends on what camera you have, they have a different list of offerings.

My broken G5 was offered:
SD850IS for $150
G9 for $250
Digital Rebel XT for $275

+$10 for 2 days shipping
+tax

You can call, find out what they offer, and call back later after you have decided.

Edit: Friend told me he'll sell me his old 20D (he claims ~2,000 clicks... I think way more!) for ~$350 body only. Decisions decisions...
