If you're really in the market for a radar detector, pony up and get something worthwhile.

Also, ask yourself if you really need this? Do the LEOs in your area use radar or laser? If it's the latter, no detector is going to save you... once they shoot you, you're busted.

There is due process. And LEOs are likely to be using a variety of equipment - but all equipment has its own limitations, including lasers.

The minimum spend for coupon LC123 is $40.00. Be sure to add your filler to bump you over the threshold.

i added your filler to get it over $40, the coupon is taking off the $10 it is supposed to, the next bump is at $50 so i guess i could get $10 worth of free stuff.

Don't they make laser scramblers in other high end detectors already? I thought they did.

No scramblers in high end detectors. Perhaps you're thinking of laser jammers. Laser jammers are legal, and sold by several companies. However they are hard-wired into your car, and generally will cost you roughly $1000.

Cobra detectors are junk. Their warning range is abysmal; you're only giving yourself a false sense of security. Do some research at radardetector dot net if you want to learn more. If you want cheap, I'd suggest a factory refurb from Escort, but as I said, do some research first.

While above is mostly true, refurb Escort will not be cheap.
Cheaper - yes, but not cheap. You'll never get refurb'ed or used Escort in $50 range ( not even in $100 I believe).

I couldn't justify spending few hundreds for RD as my driving habits are not that bad.

So I am using cheap Belltronics one for few years now and pretty satisfied with it.
It did save me quite a few times.

But I know it's limits and do not expect more that it can provide.

Even Escort or Valentine does not provide you 100% ticket free driving.
If LEO shot you with pop-up laser on the empty road, you have no chance.

So... if you CAN afford Escort or V go for it.
Or buy the best one you can afford, but be reasonable in your expectations.

And no, I would not suggest buying this Cobra one.

This is going to be a "get what you pay for" situation.
Cheap detectors are cheap because they have a shorter range (not a huge issue in most cases) AND they have lots of false alerts (a HUGE issue).

False alerts are normally caused by other radar sources.... automatic door openers at stores, garage door openers, etc. They are supposed to be limited to certain frequencies. However, they leak outside their designated frequencies, causing your detector to "see" this radar. Now, a good detector will know the difference between a traffic radar gun signature and a door opener signature and ignore the door opener and alert on the traffic radar. Cheap ones can't filter out the non-traffic radar signals as well, and thus it will just go off to be on the safe side.

False alerts cause you to start to distrust your detector and thus you don't slow down when it goes off or you just don't use it all the time since you think it's going to give you lots of false alerts. So you drive with it off or you don't react to it because you don't know if it's really sensing a speed trap. Thus defeating the purpose.

Spend the extra money. The beltronics 955, 995 and x65 are very good. The Escorts are all good. The Valentine is a good unit as well. I'd stay away from the Cobra and Uniden stuff, they are not high quality.

If you can find a really cheap detector (less than this Cobra's price), buy it and then turn it over to Escort for an $80 credit for upgrading to their stuff... just to be safe, call Escort's customer care to confirm you will get the $80 for whatever you turn in (they indicate it's a sliding scale ("up to $80" language), but when I called, they said they give $80 for all upgrades).
