Saw this in today's ad. I usually see portable drives like this around the $99 mark. Forgive me if this is a repost.

The online picture appears to indicate it is larger (thicker) than a typical 2.5 portable HD.

I believe all 1TB notebook/portable sized HD are thicker than the typical 9mm form factor found in most laptops. Good deal though. I usually see them for over $100.

Thanks Op for the heads up.
Looked in the newspaper and it was there. Got me 3
thanks again, green for u

Guess u r confused
from factor in laptops..means size of drive..ie bare drive
he means size of container not of the drive, ie the drive is inside the container ie 27mm thick
151.7 mm long
So yes this container is a bit thicker than my 160gb maxtor

I have the 640GB version of this portable drive. I compared it to my friend's 500GB Western Digital Elements portable drive and it is indeed slightly bigger. It barely fits in my Case Logic case. It does its job well though.

I've searched on Fry's website and for the life of me, I cannot find the link. Has anyone managed to find it on their website? If so, please provide a link -- I'd like to see the product details.

That's a 1.5 TB drive all right, but it's not a version of this drive. Standard drive vs. portable drive = apples vs. oranges. Or, at least, big fat grapefruit vs. little tiny tangerines.

The link provided earlier links to the desktop version not the portable version.

So what you are saying is that the:

Seagate Expansion Portable 1TB:

and
Seagate Expansion Desk 1.5TB
http://www.frys.com/product/6002338

are two totally different beasts, not just in capacity but with the "desk" verison being much larger than the "portable" version. I was thrown by the fact that the pictures look almost identical but the specs do tell a difft story and I stand corrected

The "portable" is 5.56" L x 3.15" W x 0.69" H
vs
the "desk" 8.15" L x 4.96" W x 1.57" H

the portable is a bit smaller and does not need ac power ie it is powered by the usb
the desktop connects by way of the usb port but needs power from the ac converter
correct me if i am wrong.

portable > Setup is straight forward, simply connect a single USB cable and you are ready to go. The drive is powered from the USB cable, so there is no need for an external power supply.

Desktop > Setup is straight forward, simply plug in the included power supply and USB cable and you are ready to go.

Another big difference is drive speed
portable = 5400 rpm (like in most laptops) vs desktop = 7200 rpm like most desktop HDs

The salesman at Fry's also got confused and wanted to sell me the desktop one. I wanted the portable one, it is a bit smaller and no external power supply required
I was waiting for Black Friday, figured they would go on sale then but guess black Friday came early for me
