Decent deal. Plus maybe 10% bcb will work too

Configure here

select "4GB Memory (4x1GB), 1333MHz, Single Ranked UDIMM (+$79.00)"
add to cart and apply coupon code "8317V3XB5F6SMC" and price = $403

$400 will normally get you just the ram and motherboard. Besides this server has an excellent case and power supply, 250gb hard drive, dvd-rom

4GB DDR3 RAM = $200
Motherboard = $200+
Processor = $200

Buy Win7HP for $80 - $90 online elsewhere (eBay, oem suppliers, etc)and you've got a great desktop equivalent to an i5-750 for less that $500

link to previous fw thread that has a lot of useful info

Just a heads up, there's no PCIe x16 slot for decent video cards, so if you want a gaming rig out of this, skip it. Also the Xeon 3430 does not have hyperthreading on it. As a workstation this would work great though.

Does this one has video card on it? I don't see it in spec sheet.

lol thanks for the post above me to answer my question.

it has onboard video.

it also has a x8 slot that supports x16 cards. So you can add a card for $20 - how much ever yo want to spend

I need to set up a server with Server 2008 R2 to run a testlab with hyper-v. For virtual machines I would probably be running Server 2008 R2 as a DC with exchange 2007 and SCCM as well as 2 windows 7 clients.

My question is should I upgrade the cpu to the 3440 (with hyper threading) or will it not make much difference for my situation? TIA.

According to http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+X3440+... the x3440 chip looks like it is better than the x3450 chip speed wise. I would, and did, spend the $90 for the x3440 chip.

I also imagine the power consumption on a Xeon X3430 is pretty significant vs C2D and i5/7, no?

x3430 is just an i5/i7 with some added features, ecc protection and a few more goodies. ecc is great for those who want machines that don't crash.

Is this thing super noise? I am thinking of buying one with 4GB memory, $396 before tax, is it a good price for a no OS server?

thanks,

OK, I'm about to order one. I'm upgrading to the X3440 for $90 and will add an additional 4gb (2 x 2gb) aftermarket.

I actually bought one back when it was $299 and just wish it would drop that low again but I just can't wait. This machine will just be for a test lab but looks like it will be easy to get my money back on eBay when I don't need it anymore.

check the priced on udimm ECC ddr3 - not cheap. server motherboards these days are locked to ecc iirc.

I got one last year. Even though it has onboard video, it's terrible. I'm not talking "won't do high fps games well", I'm talking "won't scroll down a word document well". Just a heads up that you'll want to get a video card.

Also, no onboard audio. I got a USB sound card from DealExtreme for under $3 and it works great.

plenty of solid video cards really cheap these days

Apart from these recently there have been Newegg deals on gt220 and gt210 in the 20-30$ range - if you can get those , great

I upgraded my CPU to the 3440 and ordered 4gb ram from Newegg, 2 x 2GB for $114 shipped. Several reviews mention compatibility with Dell T110.

Thanks OP. I'm in for one. I upgraded the processor to the Intel® Xeon® X3440, 2.53 GHz, 8M Cache, Turbo, HT [add $90.00] and left the RAM alone. I'll buy more RAM later from somewhere else.

Anyone know how loud this system is? I just got a T310 last week and it's WAY too loud to be used as a desktop. I was just about to order an Optiplex 780, but could have 2 of these for the same price...

can we upgrade the video card of T110?cause its only 8mb.. tnx

Check out the posts above. My post telling you that you'll definitely WANT to upgrade the video and the following posts that even have links to video card options. I put in a $4.99 card that I found locally and it works just fine but seriously, the onboard video is just about useless.

Yeah, my point was that people should plan on getting a card. Not that it would cost a fortune.

Are you sure that those x16 PCIe 2.0 cards will work? I can't remember all the details, since it's been so long since I got my system, but I thought that x16 cards weren't necessarily compatible. Or is it that they will fit but only run at 8x? Or is there a dremel involved?
