Well, not that it matters much, but that's a load of hooey in so many ways.

In the first place, in the world of tiny transflash USB 2.0 card readers, 26mm is nothing to brag about. I have one that's shorter, and it's so pointless that it was sent to me, unasked-for, as a freebie.

In the second place, if it's 2mm thick and 10mm wide, it's useless, because a standard USB Type A connector (which most buyers would expect) is 4.5mm thick and 12mm wide. Mini USB Type Mini-A is ~3.1mm thick x 7mm wide. and micro USB is about 3x7 externally (Micro USB Type A is paradoxically larger in cross-section, because it is a full rectangle. It's the internal contacts that are 'micro')

To add insult to injury, a MicroSD card is 11mm wide x 1mm thick, leaving the sides open and insufficient thickness for spring contacts and any socket casing that could hold a microSD card in place vertically

So basically, either they are completely lying about the specs and "World's smallest", or this gadget won't hold the SD card *or* USB connection reliably enough to be of any use. (Maybe that's why they don't show it in use or with any exposed metal contact -- my tiniest microSD adapter is just over 20mm long and is *all* exposed contacts (it comes in a removable plastic sleeve which attaches to the keychain, something like this, which a friend bought)

But I will admit that the one at DealExtreme costs US$0.98 w/ free shipping, while this deal is US$0.49 w/ free shipping (and I'm tempted to buy this one just to see what it's like), but the DealExtreme one works and fits its components snugly. I wouldn't buy this one and expect it to work and meet its specs/promises.

They aren't even selling them (at about the price of a US 1st class envelope)) to clear their warehouse -- it'd be cheaper to just toss them in on other purchases as a freebie, when you consider processing costs, and 10,000 items of the stated size spec, shrinkwrapped, would just about fit in a shoebox. I'd guess they just want to inflate their buyer and/or marketing lists, and maybe pre-reg some future buyers.

None of which reflects on the OP (thanks for posting!), but FWers shouldn't expect it to be as advertised. Note that the one pictured on Amazon (preceding post) is 0.5 x 0.2 x 0.7 inches (about 12.5mm x 5mm x 17.5mm, not 10mm x 2mm x 26mm!)

Wait so the microSD card goes into the USB port WITH the adapter????

Yup. Read the reviews. It's an elegant way to get the USB/microSD contacts at opposite end -- since both have their contacts at their "inserting end", have them insert in opposite directions!

This isn't a "load of hooey". You don't need the standard metal casing to have something like this that works in a standard USB slot. These readers are a standard item on DealExtreme and as long as you don't get a dud, they work fine - and they're great for creating your own thin-enough-for-a-wallet flash drive from a MicroSD card (just trim the plastic loop off). Keeping it in your wallet will also keep the metal contacts safer than if you put it on your keychain.

Caveats:

- they tend to be a bit thick for most USB slots, and I don't exactly like forcing them into the USB slot of my laptop knowing it might damage the slot. I did have one of these (from DX) which I filed down the top surface of (in addition to cutting off the loop) so that it fit more easily into USB slots and it still worked.

- the MicroSD cards tend to be difficult to remove once inserted (if you look at a MicroSD card, there's really not much surface to grip). With that in mind, I would only suggest using these for the purpose of making a permanent flash drive from an extra MicroSD card and not as a reader (where you'll be regularly inserting/removing the card).

1.5 years ago when I went to Japan I bought an adapter similar (or the same) than the one in Amazon but branded Buffalo. I paid $25 thinking that I could not find it in the States, now here is $8.

This one is smaller, and can stay in your USB port without being snapped off...

I have a couple and they work great
