Staples $5 rewards per cart recycled when spend at least $59 on HP ink the same day (9/5-10/02)

Recycle ANY cartridge and get back $5 in Staples Rewards (recycling rewards) when you spend $59 that day on HP ink. The ink purchase reward is at the standard 10% rate of the net ink purchase. HP toner purchases do NOT qualifying for this offer.

Since this offer spans two months, it should be valid once for the month of September and once for the month of October.

So, standard members can recycle up to 10 carts at $5 per and premier members can recycle up to 20 carts at $5 per with a qualifying purchase of HP ink. Once again, for premier members it is sort of free ink on the rewards offer only.

Premier Rewards members purchasing a net $60 in HP ink and recycling 20 carts would receive:

$100 in recycling rewards (20 x $5)
$6 in purchase rewards (10% x $60)
-----
$106 in recycling and purchase rewards.

Of course, $40 (20 x $2) of the recycling rewards would be earned just for recycling so the net return for the additional ink purchase is $66.

Standard Rewards Rewards members purchasing a net $60 in HP ink and recycling 10 carts would receive:

$50 in recycling rewards (10 x $5)
$6 in purchase rewards (10% x $60)
-----
$56 in recycling and purchase rewards.

Of course, $20 (10 x $2) of the recycling rewards would be earned just for recycling so the net for the additional ink purchase is $36.

For September transactions, this offer possibly can be combined with the HP gas card rebate for purchases of at least $75 in eligible HP ink. Do note that only certain HP inks are eligible for this rebate. See the rebate form for eligible ink purchases. See rebate information below.

----------------------------------------

Recycling Reward Terms:

Valid 9/5/10-10/2/10. Earn $5 back in Staples Rewards on HP ink recycling when you spend $59 on HP ink in the same day. Minimum purchase requirement does not include tax or shipping. Laser Toner recycling is not valid for extra Rewards. ...

Note: last go around the terms included "HP laser toner is not valid for extra Rewards" which is probably what Staples meant since Staples has only one recycling code (at least Staples only had one recycle code in the past).

----------------------------------------

Impact of using coupons (and or rewards):

As with recent Staples Rewards offers, purchases made with coupons and/or rewards will reduce the qualifying purchase amount so make sure that the after coupon and/or rewards amount of the HP ink is over $59. Also, Staples coupons are prorated to the entire order -- apparently even those targeted to a specific item. Below are examples of several purchases:

Qualifying for Rewards Example A:
$85 in HP ink
($25) off Staples coupon/reward
-----
$60 in net HP ink

Qualifying Example B:
$80 in HP ink
$20 in other stuff
-----
$100
($25) off Staples coupon/reward
-----
$75 total and $60 in net HP ink*.

* - Staples coupon is pro-rated 4/5 (80/100) to the HP ink ($80-$20=$60) and 1/5 (20/100) to the other stuff ($20-$5=$15).

Non-qualifying Example C:
$75 in HP ink
($25) off Staples coupon/reward
-----
$50 in net HP ink

Non-qualifying Example D:
$60 in HP ink
$15 in other stuff
----
$75
($25) off Staples coupon/reward
-----
$50 total and $40 in net HP ink.*

* - Staples coupon is pro-rated 4/5 (60/75) to the HP ink ($60-$20=$40) and 1/5 (15/75) to the other stuff ($15-$5=$10).

----------------------------------------

Purchase online and recycle in-store:

While the HP ink purchase transaction and the ink recycle transaction have to occur on the same day, there is no requirement that they happen at the same time. So while the ink recycling transaction is in-store only, the HP ink purchase can be made in-store or online. There is one technical issue for those recycling in-store and purchasing online.

For orders placed online, the Staples Rewards system dates orders on the shipping date not the purchase date. If the shipping date is not the same as the purchase/recycle date, it might be necessary to contact Staples Rewards customer service to get the reward awarded. One possible way to avoid this for orders placed Monday through Friday is to order soon after 12:01 AM eastern (Staples dates orders on eastern time). If the order is placed early enough the order is generally shipped the same day.

For the similar deal in June, I placed my order at 3 AM eastern and the order shipped the same day. I recycled in-store later that day. All the rewards (regular, bonus, and purchase) were awarded automatically.

----------------------------------------

HP Rebate:

There is also an HP rebate for a $15 gas card with the purchase of at least $75 in eligible HP ink. It is YMMV whether the $75 in eligible HP ink purchase must be before or after coupons (and rewards). Also, the limit on this rebate is 10 gas cards although I am not sure if documentation for all 10 have to be submitted at the same time. If the rebate is limited to one submission of up to 10 purchases of $75 in eligible HP ink, then those who have already done this rebate would not qualify. Again, I do not know how the rebate limit is enforced.

Below is a safe example to qualify for both the $5 in recycling rewards and the $15 HP gas card rebate:

$100 in HP ink from the rebate form's eligible list
(25) off Staples coupon
-----
$75 in net HP ink

Premier Rewards members recycling 20 carts would receive:

$100 in recycling rewards (20 x $5)
$7.50 in purchase rewards (10% x $75)
$15 HP gas card rebate
-----
$122.50 in rewards and rebates.

Of course, $40 (20 x $2) of the recycling rewards would be earned just for recycling so the net for the additional ink purchase is $82.50.

Standard Rewards members recycling 10 carts would receive:

$50 in recycling rewards (10 x $5)
$7.50 in purchase rewards (10% x $75)
$15 HP gas card rebate
-----
$72.50 in rewards and rebates.

Of course, $20 (10 x $2) of the recycling rewards would be earned just for recycling so the net for the additional ink purchase is $52.50.

OMG! Another one?!

Boy, it would be nice if HP let another ink company have a sale.

Great deal OP. Thanks for posting.
Once again, I don't understand why "it's sort of free ink for premier members" since premier members make at least $40 with or without Staples coupon and/or HP Rebate as discussed in your previous thread

Yeah....I'm waiting for Canon ink deal but don't mind HP ink as I have two HP D5460 bought from Staples for $7.50 each.......great printers!

Well, the standard $2 per cart would be received regardless, so its only the additional $3 per cart that counts. Pay $60 for ink, receive $60 in rewards. The rewards then have to be spent on something else at Staples. That in my book is sort of free.

As for the $15 HP gas card rebate, presuming the ink you need is on the eligible list, some posters have reported that their rebates have been denied because the after coupon ink amount was not at least $75. If that is the case, using net $60 in ink is YMMV. To guarantee the $15 rebate then requires spending net $75 on ink which means, once again, the ink is sort of free ($60 reward + $15 rebate = net $75 ink purchase).

Off topic but!

For those of you who did the free after gift card Backpack deal,

the staplesrebates.com site now shows the gift card as being mailed! be on the lookout for yours.

This is confusing.
What does OP mean by "The ink reward is at the standard 10% rate" ??? 10% of WHAT? What is an "ink reward"? Is that different from the recycling thing?

Can you recycle any brand cartridge or only HP carts?
So you can recycle 10 carts, and get $50 in "rewards"? (Is that like a $50 "gift card", applicable at face value on any future purchase?

jonkoerner said: This is confusing.

Yes it's different. You get rewards for turning in ink carts at $5 each in this deal. You also get 10% rewards whenever you buy ink at Staples. So, you get both for this deal.

jonkoerner said: Can you recycle any brand cartridge or only HP carts?

Somewhat like gift card but a bit more restrictive. Only a few months to use it.

jonkoerner said: This is confusing.

Cartridge recycling rewards have been around for years, and so have you. Information is readily available if you bother to search for it. There is even a FAQ.

I re-jiggered the OP a bit. I hope this clarifies the recycle and purchase rewards.

I would hope the first sentence already answers what types of carts can be recycled.

As to what are Staples Rewards:

  • Staples:

    • recycle:
      • value: $2 in rewards per cartridge recycled
      • limit: Membership Level:
        • Standard: 10 per calendar month - no per day restriction
        • Premier: 20 per calendar month ($1000 in qualified spending) - no per day restriction

      • type: any used ink or toner cartridge sold at any retail stores in the US

    • no purchase requirement
    • recycling rewards:
      • issued: monthly, on a separate rewards check from purchase rewards printable from the rewards site in the latter half of the month in the month after the qualifying transaction.
      • usage: recycling rewards (and purchase rewards) are redeemable for most merchandise in Staples stores, online at www.Staples.com or by phone at 1-800-333-3330 but cannot be redeemed for or applied against taxes, cash, credit remittance, delivery charges, custom printing orders placed online, promotional products, Staples gift cards, third party gift cards, prepaid phone cards, postage stamps, prior purchases, Staples Industrial purchases or any purchases made on other provider Web sites.
        • online: single transaction - must use full amount of reward check
        • in-store: two transactions -- a balance coupon is issued in-store if rewards check is not used all at once. Balance coupon has same expiration date as rewards check, must be used all at once in-store or online

      • expiration:
        • standard: the last day of the month 2 months following the month in which they are issued
        • premier: the last day of the month 5 months following the month in which they are issued

    • member services

The above is from the ink/toner cartridge recycling primer/faq for Office Depot, OfficeMax and Staples

And membership in the rewards program is required to take advantage of rewards offers.

Looks like there's a couple of Staples coupons this week as well.

$10 off $40 and $20 off $80 on HP ink => HP Ink Coupons
Coupons valid online or by phone only and expire 9/4/10.

Yah! I was going to post this. You can buy $80 worth of ink & use $20/80 & still qualify for both Staples rewards & HP rebates. Remember that Staples coupon usually works upto 72 ours of expiration date beepless & painless. Thus you can use this coupon till 9/7 if your cashier doesn't mind scanning.

zmaster said: Thus you can use this coupon till 9/7 if your cashier doesn't mind scanning. No barcode; cashier must not mind punching numbers ... Valid by phone or online only (YMMV)

Will the code work online/phone after expiration?

I got my backpack gift card a few days ago... Just in time to use toward ink for this week's $5/cart!

Just making sure... use of a gift card does NOT reduce amount of rewards or qualifying purchase amount (for the $5/cart), correct?

Thanks for the great detailed post, bpvh!

Is that a safe assumption, or should we get clarification from Staples?

BTW, my $15 gas card from June was finally mailed out yesterday.

Anyone ever turn in print heads? Do they accept them same as ink cartridges? I have 6 HP inks and 4 HP print heads to get rid of...

yes, because the ink recyling works on a calendar month.

right, a gift card is like paying with cash/credit card for deals like this. no reduction in rewards/qualifying amounts.

Anyone know if you can recycle in store and buy the ink online (on same day)? My store validates all coupons so it is virtually impossible to use coupons now.

pkp413 said: Anyone know if you can recycle in store and buy the ink online (on same day)? My store validates all coupons so it is virtually impossible to use coupons now.

using coupons, if it drops your cash spend under $59 before tax will invalidate the deal.

Yes, I know. But there is nothing to prevent spending $85+ on ink and using $25 coupon (online).

pkp413 said: Yes, I know. But there is nothing to prevent spending $85+ on ink and using $25 coupon (online).

no, there isn't. just making sure you're aware so you don't get an unpleasant surprise.

So they don't have to be done in the same transaction (recycling/ink purchase)? They can be done separately -- one at B&M and the other at .com?

The requirement is that the purchase and recycling happen on the same day.

If purchasing online and recycling in-store please keep in mind:

For orders placed online, the Staples Rewards system generally dates orders on the shipping date not the purchase date. If the shipping date is not the same as the purchase/recycle date, it might be necessary to contact Staples Rewards customer service to get the reward awarded. One possible way to avoid this for orders placed Monday through Friday is to order soon after midnight eastern (Staples dates orders on eastern time). If the order is placed early enough the order is generally shipped the same day. In the June deal similar to this one, I placed my order at 2 AM central time and the order shipped the same day. Then I just had to make sure I recycled that same day.

Thank you, this is really helpful. Its a headache to call and explain the whole scenario to get the rewards if they don't post automatically.

check your emails, Staples sent out lots of 15% off your instore purchase coupons this morning.

I placed an order for ink last month at 3PM and it shipped the same day. It's definitely safer to follow bpvh's advice, but as long as you don't order too late in the day there's actually a fairly good chance your order will still ship same day.

jasonlkska said: check your emails, Staples sent out lots of 15% off your instore purchase coupons this morning.

These specifically exclude HP ink.

Wow they do exclude HP ink. I would have never thought that would be a stipulation. Thanks for pointing that out.

One more day if you want it.

How does the rewards look when viewing your account?

I purchased $74 worth of HP ink on Sep 30 and recycled 10 carts at the same time.
When I look at my ink rewards on the Staples rewards site, it shows 10 carts at $2/each, with a total for $20.00 in rewards.
Should it say $5/each or will the extra $3/cart show somewhere else?

Thanks.

For whatever reason, the Staples rewards site does not note the $3 bonus ink rewards (or any other bonus rewards for that matter) anywhere on the site except on the rewards check itself when it becomes available. Even after the extra $3 has been awarded on the check the "My Ink Recycling Rewards" page will still have the rewards at $2 per cart.

September rewards are available now.

October rewards are available now. Got anoter $100 coupon for the purchase on 10/1.

Purchase (standard) and recycling rewards or just recycling?

I did the toner deal and only my purchase rewards -- mostly 10% for the purchase of two toners -- are available at this time.

bpvh said: Purchase (standard) and recycling rewards or just recycling?

Both. $100 for recycling 20 ink cartridges and $6.xx for 10% of the ink purchase.
