Well, I paid $35 for it couple of days back from Seagate. Too bad. Also not sure if this one is a new or refurb.

1 Sale is usually pretty good about listing things as refurbished, and I don't see anything on the page for today's deal that makes me think it is.

Thanks OP. Got one more.

@hook13, I have connected 3 drives and each one appears as a separate drive.

FYI. There is a way to make the drives available on the n/w without having a pogoplug account (See reviews for the Dockstar unit on Amazon)

Thanks OP. Seems like a neat gadget. Anybody knows if plugged in (top connector) FreeAgent drive spins all the time or goes to sleep and stops after inactivity period? I want to keep this thing on all the time and this feature is important to me.

Nice deal ...... passed on it for $39.95 but for $23 just couldn't resist.

I have one of these and the drive does spins down but then when you want to access if after long time it does take couple of seaconds to spin back up again.

Directions for home network server....can anyone dumb this down another level? do you place this file on a seperate flash/usb drive or on all drives attached to the unit? how do you create a .ceid file? just save the text from notepad as .ceid? I don't want to use the software that comes w/ this dock-

Plug your USB drive into your computer, format it (preferably with NTFS) and
create a file on it named .ceid

Using notepad, or your favorite text editor, put these lines in the file
(replacing yoursharename with a name of your own choosing). Note the mode=rw
allows reading and writing.

servicename=yoursharename
xcode.metadata=never
xcode.thumbnail=never
xcode.stream=never
cifs.mode=rw

Plug the usb drive into the Dockstar, and you’re all set. The drive will be
available as
\\fadsMMMMMM\yoursharename (where MMMMMM are the last 6 letters and numbers
of the Dockstar’s mac address, which is on the label on the bottom).

WHOA! Says "Includes Pogoplug Internet file sharing service - no subscription or additional fees required."

I remember when this thing was on woot.com a little while back it had Pogoplug included as well. I hope this is true, I just bought one now after reading this.

Lifetime Pogoplug or 1 year? The woot deal had full lifetime. I already have 2 of these (Bricked one, oops) and a sheevaplug. These devices are the ultimate mini computers. The case comes apart rather easily and it doesn't look like it'd be too hard to hack into your own box.

save your frustration order from Seagate. this company charges your card right away and half the time never ships your order.
only once you ask about it do they refund your card..stay away.

Drive spins down after a period of inactivity. I don't remember if the spindown time was configurable tho.

If you don't have a serial cable, try that first to get into the uboot loader (I spliced a Nokia DKU-5 (for level shifting 5V -> 3.3V) to an Xbox 360 DVD Drive Power Cable, unless you'd rather solder it). If that doesn't work, there's always JTAG (pinouts posted @ plugapps forum). But, for $23 it might not be worth the hassle and you can send the borked one my way!

If you click on the specs button it shows as new:
Condition: NEW
Retail Packaging
Manufacturer: Seagate
Model: STDSA10G-RK

I've been waiting to find one this cheap so grabbed one.

I got serial working fine. I got a Siemens phone adapter that works awesome and already does TTL serial, $5 on eBay.

From what I've read though is no one has gotten JTAG working. (I haven't been able to find the pins, just serial)

Suggestions for a cheap USB/JTAG adapter? I have a few other devices I've collected that friends have bricked (Mostly routers)

Wow, that's some relatively new info:

Whoa...! Just thinking about this device...yeah, I am in for 1.
Thanks a ton, Butchy.

Note:
Anyone interested to mod it as DVR...? Pls share the recipe, if you find one.

1) The .ceid goes in the root directory. Yes, you can edit it notepad.
I had a bit of a problem getting this tho work the first time around. Here is how I remember how I got it to work:

1) Turn on the server, add your drive. Server will put a .ceid file in the root directory, and also create a folder with some files in it.
2) Turn off the server (un-plug it) and take the drive out, attach it to your computer.
3) Edit the .ceid drive with the above.
4 Plug it back into the seagate

Can someone tell how fast the real network transfer speed for this one?
One review mentioned 60kb/s and specs say Gigabit ethernet. What is in reality?

And another though. This gadget is running Linux ( per ssome reviews), can USB ports can be used for print server?

In 4 1 while thinking.

This is gigabit network connect - but the drives connected at USB 2 speed. This is a device that you can network multiple thumb drives very easily.

Good info in this thead concerning .ceid file. You can also set the windows share through pogoplug, but it seems a lot want to get raw and to the point (and understand the "magic").

Picked it up for 2 bucks more at Newegg a few months back. This has been on sale for about $25 (with shipping) from Woot, Newegg, and Buy.com for a single day - or until soldout.

I bit the bullet for $23. I had the pogoplug itch but not the $100 to spend on it.

Yes, it has gigabit, but if you're using the pogo service and are streaming OUTSIDE of your house, it depends on the UPLOAD speed of your internet connection.

Now, I can't speak for internal network speed using the (default) pogo software, but I can transfer inside my gigabit network at >200Megabits/s (>27MegaBytes/s) using the plugapps distro from a drive formatted as ext3.

The pogo software cannot act as a print server as-is (no drivers included) and although I'm not using mine for a print server, I'm sure you could do it with plugapps. In fact, it might be 'do-able' with the pogo software, I just don't know.

i havent been keeping up with these technologies. i still have an old Linksys slug for my nas at home. is this basically a hacked slug to allow internet streaming?

it comes with lifetime pogoplug - see more here

Thanks OP. In for 1.

Oh COOL re the new free lifetime service .

I and a few others picked up a couple of these for $1 each back in April when Office Depot had a price SNAFU.
LOL

Not sure if this works also on the Segate unit, but see here:
Pogoplug allows printing from an email.

Thanks, OP, me and my Paypal account just purchased one.

Does anyone know if I can host a very simple (static content/publicly accessible) website off of one of these, and maybe an old 32MB thumbdrive?

Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know if this will power a 2.5 inch usb drive that doesn't have an external power supply and takes power from USB?

In for 1!!! Thanks OP!

I just contacted Pogoplug and they stated that free lifetime subscription will be activated soon. So it's not publicly released but they are switching over to full lifetime on the dockstar.

Here is the reply email that I receive from CS.

"Thank you for contacting Pogoplug Support.

This change was made recently.

Rest assured all Dockstar subscriptions will be upgraded to an Unlimited Lifetime Subscription. However, at this time, I do not have an exact timeline for this upgrade.

I am closing this ticket but feel free to contact Pogoplug in the future.

Enjoy Dockstar and (soon to be unlimited) Pogoplug Service
-AdamC"

I'm getting one!

I am using it as a webserver running lighttpd and PHP. The web contents are pretty complicated, but the speed is ok. One of my web is to search about 1000 files and the contents in them, which takes about 2-3 seconds.

Actually, you get two choices (when you install the application)

Option 1: each drive show up as independent drive letter
Option 2: show up as a single drive letter say P:\ and under P:\ you see each HDD as a folder

Skipping 99 Messages...

I dont think this is option, but does anyone know if you can simply plug this into existing pc and have it recognize the drive(s) on it or to somehow point it to those drives. I have external , but my 2tb with media stuff is on internal hooked up to AV.

fyi, i apparently had theft of my credit card info etc... shortly after buying this from them. Only internet purchase I had made on that card, had 1 only other local charge 15 days prior to this purchase,and a total of 2 charges within 30 the days prior to this. Who knows.
