This is a new price drop since yesterday. A new map should be made available if not preloaded, so a very good value for a GPS that even does multi destination.

Refurb Magellan units have always had really outdated maps. Have they changed their policy?

Refurb Magellan units have always had really outdated maps. Have they changed their policy? It appears they have. I forgot to post it so thanks calikanbi. It seems to me unless they are playing word games with the 30 day phrase which I doubt, that for $10 the latest map is available, a steal.

I have confirmed with Magellan that the $10 was for when they shipped out a CD or DVD for the software update, but now everything can be done online; therefore the map update is free.

Seems to me according to the wording that this only applies if they release a new version in the 30 days after your purchase. Doesn't seem that it would apply for a new version that was released 3 months ago (since the current update is "Spring 2010"). Has anybody experienced or found out otherwise? Bought the 1saleaday one yesterday, and the WM one today. Would be nice to update each for only $10 (or free if what iflookzkill has said is true).
Thats what I meant when I said word games. They could say our newest map is more than 30 days old, so... sorry. Im hopeful however they'll just permit access to the newest map when the unit is registered. YMMV
Nice features for a $40 gps. Lane assist, multi destination, text to speech, free map upgrade if yours is outdated in the first 30 days.......ok, I'm in.
I love Magellan GPS. Routing and voice prompt rock!

Anyone know if these can be made weather resistant? Or vibration for that matter? I'd love to have one mounted on my motorcycle!

thanks. $45 shipped to NYC. A steal with Text to Speech and Free Map Update. I usually use my Cell Phone for GPS directions but it's nice to have a dedicated GPS just in case of no cell coverage.
also, shipping if free if it's convenient for you to drive to one of their walmarts with a "Site to Store." Shipping to anywhere is $3.

If you are willing to spend a little more on a Magellan Refurb ($79), you can get a GPS that optimizes the most direct route between up to 20 stops, has built-in Bluetooth and built-in Live Traffic reports (it is a subscription, but first 3 months are free).

Has anyone updated their maps on a magellan with the 30 day guarantee?. I want to pull the trigger on this if i got their new map included, but with the possibility that the map on this thing might be 2-3 years old makes me a little leery.
This reply to the Free Map Update question is from the WalMart site:
"The Summer 2010 map upgrade just came out and for the 1st 30 days the download is free from the Magellan site after you register it. You will need to fax or e mail them a proof of purchase- the download takes about 2-3 hours. The map it comes with is not at all bad. - but of course, you want the 2010 latest map 39! Magellan support is excellent, I recently got a Magellan from WalMart on-line & just love it!!!"
I have to believe the spirit of the 30-day free update is that "normally" the units ship with the latest version and they don't want their customers to feel burned if a new version comes out right after their purchase. So they just allow users to download the latest version within 30-days of purchase as a goodwill gesture. It also seems much simpler for them to just say yes/no based on purchase date, rather than to argue with customers about when an update was released relative to purchase date. Just my .02 of course.

I am copying and pasting this from the WalMart Q&A page re: the spring 2010 map update for the refurb: "No. I thought it did. Just got off the phone with Magellan's tech support, after three phone calls, 1 1/2 hours of waiting, speaking with three different reps, only to find out I still can't download the updates, even though I purchased the product just 2 days ago. The only option I get online is a $79.99 upgrade. I inputed my serial number correctly, downloaded their content manager and installed it, reinstalled, followed all their suggestions. But still, all I get when I try to download the update is just one button--"BUY". Magellan should not even say they have ANY map guarantee if they won't give it to us."
I have read similar remarks (inability to update after purchase) on several review sites/forums. To me the text is extremely clear. They wouldn't be "playing games" to deny an upgrade:

Initially, I thought there might be a chance of FALL update (better than expected, but admittedly a gamble) soon. After research, I no longer believe this *or* that you can download a Spring update (if the unit doesn't ship with it)
I don't know what "AwesomeCollector" on the WalMart site is talking about when he says the "Summer 2010" update just came out. Everywhere on the Magellan and customer sites, it says the last update is Spring 2010 (39), which became available for download on or around June 12, 2010 (there were website issues at first). Note 39 was an upDATE (to Base Map 35), not an upGRADE .
If Spring 2010 (39) came out in June, a Fall update in September doesn't seem as likely as I hoped
Perhaps someone who is experienced with Magellan GPS can comment: how often do they update? What's the numbering system based on? (i.e. 39 updates in how long?) Magellan has been around since 1986, and I'm sure they had more frequent updates when they were first beginning to flesh out their maps. I note that the immediately preceding versions had titles like "2007/2008", but maybe they get data from Google now -- folks on the Magellan Forums raised questions about this "seasonal" Spring update, saying it was unusual naming. (example thread, citing issues with support)
I'm not trying to threadcrap, just get the facts for my own decision. On one hand, the longer Magellan tends to go between updates, the more likely it is that the version in these units will *be* the latest, already. On the other hand, if it doesn't (I prefer to think it will), you'll have some sadly old maps
As I posted above, the map download would freeze shortly after starting. I called Magellan and they said wireless internet can cause this, so I tried a wired connection. When I started the download, instead of showing ~60 minutes left, it went straight to about 12 minutes left, but still would freeze like before. At least with that short amount of time, I was able to stop and reload the magellan app and start downloading again a few times to get it to finish. So I guess I'll never know what the problem was.
BTW, I noticed two of my 1340's are hardware version 4, and one is version 14. Any idea what the differences are?
