This is actually the most reasonably priced thing apple has done in a while. Almost tempting, but will wait for initial round of reviews before jumping in. See how it compares to my cheap boxee computer i use.
List price on Apple is supposed to be a hot deal. Just the fact that apple products exist in the world is supposed to make us excited. Short of eBay, it's pretty hard to get a hot deal on this stuff. Call me a hater but I like my kid's Ipod touch which I bought off eBay at a good price. It's a nice device, especially with Netflix.
Agreed. Poor format support too which is clearly made to force you into buying stuff instead of streaming it locally. Better off with the upcoming Boxee or a WD Live.
To each his own, I suppose. Was waiting on today's announcement to decide - just ordered a Roku as the Apple device is underwhelming.
If it actually ran iOS, there would be some interesting potential, but it doesn't. If it could do 1080p, it would be a point in its favor since the Roku firmware that supports 1080p is not available yet, but it can't and there's no mention of it ever being able to. If it was available tomorrow and there was nothing in the market competing against it, I'm sure it would be attractive, but it's not available for another month.
I will probably be upgrading my 2nd gen touch with the new model, but I'll be passing on AppleTV.[/L]

Why not just go with the newly released SageTV HD-300 and get support for nearly every video format and the already awesome SageTV server?
I'll wait for the Logitech revue, which will tie into my dish DVR and give me Netflix, youtube, Facebook, flickr, Amazon, Pandora, PC streaming as well as HULU, CBS, HBO through the flash capable browser. It will eventually add android marketplace for apps.
All these media streamers are missing one important thing: they need to tie into your existing cable box and be seamless so the wife can operate it too.

Connected DVD players offer the same functionality, ease of use for those less technically inclined.
Most newer displays are also connected, making external devices obsolete.
Personally, I am avoiding ALL Android-based devices; I REALLY liked one of the new Samsung phones, almost pulled the trigger - until I learned that there is no simple, robust method to sync Outlook contacts, calendar. Goggle expects you to upload all such data to their servers, and update continuously - not for my business, thank you. There are some 3rd party software solutions, but none appear to be bug free, well supported, worth the hassle. It is unfortunate that Google, Apple attempt to control consumers, restrict options in their war against each other, Microsoft; I wil simply refuse to play - which means I will have to choose between Win 7 mobile, RIM and possibly HP's WebOS for my next smartphone - a compromise I am willing to accept.

But those DVD players don't interface with your cable box, or offer a web browser with flash to get you hulu or other flash based streaming sites.
If done right, the revue could make every other boxes obsolete. My dream box needs to interface with my existing cable box/ DVR/ satellite receiver. It needs to be able to get Netflix/Amazon/youtube/pandora. It needs to be able to stream music/pics/video from my pc. It needs a web browser. It needs Flash so i can watch ustream/livestream/hulu/hbo... It needs Apps so I can get the weather, radar, facebook feed, flickr, some mind numbing games.
I've been playing around, and nothing meets all these needs. Xbox or media center don't interface with my existing Dish reciever. Boxee & XBMC don't either. TiVo doesn't have the web browser for hulu et al.
There is nothing special about this other than the fact that it's an Apple product. It's simply Apple's own foray into the networked media player market, and many other players with superior functionality have been available at a similar/lower price for quite a while now. The only difference is that this can use Apple's proprietary media formats/services, and not much else. But if you get a WDTV (or similar), you can play a crapload of media formats and use services other than iTunes/Netflix. It would be one thing if this device had a remarkable interface, but there's little that sets it apart from similar devices aside from the fact that it's effectively Apple's own cash register in your living room.
I second the notion to wait on the Logitech Revue or the Boxee box. Boxee box is supposed to be released in November and is getting very good reviews so far - and it will not be closed like any apple system.
