the marketing dept is doing "test water".

Ack, Windows CE strikes again.

Shouldn't the pricing be the other way around?

K-mart this week has a 7' netbook for $90

What is Windows CE?

This is GREAT, ONION told me NEVER to spend over $100 on a Netbook or over $400 on a laptop.

"Compact Edition"....used in some GPS units, older PIM's, phones, etc.. Limited software available. It's Windows Jim, but not as we know it.

Generally speaking, Windows CE is the core behind Pocket PC and Windows Mobile phone. It was the 1st mobile OS that can do multi-tasking and provide rich multimedia feature. There are still some Windows Mobile phones on market, e.g. those HTCs.

As for now, most of the GPS PNAs are still powered by Windows CE.

Most people on the defunct HD thread think this will be junk. I'm hoping it's the higher specced 1.2 Ghz, 30 GB HDD one. If so & it'll stream Hulu & YT. And I can get one, I'm in.

Apparently this thread pre-dated the HD thread, but there were a lot of good links in the HD thread. Wouldn't it have been better to merge them? Plus, I think that the HD thread should have been kept open.

This thread is about an article about the deal, the HD thread was about an actual ad scan (eg. an actual deal).

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/27/augens-99-genbook-smartbook-p...

Read this review about Augen's Android-based $99 netbook, not so good. Wonder how the CVS one will turn out.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/03/coby-85-smartbook-feels-like-...

Here's a Coby $85 netbook running WinCE, that Engadget seemed to like, but they didn't test YouTube streaming, which I think is going to be the real challenge.

We'll know a lot more about it when either a Sylvania model number surfaces, or someone gets their hands on the product and plays with it. Until then it's all conjecture and wishful thinking on our part.

After reading all the comments in the other thread, and adding a couple of my own, I read the post of the low priced refurb ASUS netbooks at Mwave. Currently at $119 with free shipping and no tax for most, it is at least a product where you know what you are getting. Windows Xp vs. CE on a chip in particular. Still a small SSD.

Since I have been in the market for a low cost netbook, and am heading out of town in a week - I went for a $139 ASUS with a 9" screen. Mind you, I don't have a smart phone and don't plan on having one until they are more affordable to purchase and operate. Here are some links, at least for consideration....
7" ASUS
Larger ASUS

Read some of the reviews on the "G Netbook":

http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/sylvania-7-g-netbook/4505-3121_7...
http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-GNET13001-Netbook-Processor-Escap...
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details...

Not so good reviews with the included "gOS", but seem to be better once they installed XP on it. I wonder what hardware specs the CVS model is going to have, because the picture of the netbook in the CVS ad is different than the pictures of these "G Netbook" models.

You needed a netbook now.

My need is not immediate. If the higher speced Sylvania goes for $99. It'll be a better box.

MODS - can we unlock the Hot Deals thread about this? The deal is now officially semi-live, the "sneak peek" of next weeks CVS flyer is online at cvs.com, and the netbook is in it.

I'm posting from this netbook now. works pretty good, but wince is limited. only 55MB free ram, can't imagine how they can put 1GB of ram on a $40 video card, but only 128MB in a netbook

Specs! We need the FULL specs on this unit ASAFP!

Thanks!

Here is the spec, it stings, terrible, it's basically a toy for kids I would only pay $9.99 not $99.

FYI, the specs for Sylvania Netbook are for a completely different model than Amazon. The model on sale at CVS has much lower specs (128MB RAM, 2GB storage, Win CE 6.0, etc.) My local store received them over the weekend and I verified the specs on the box.

This was reported on sd.

Thanks for the detailed specs... Any chance of telling us the processor, processor speed, available ports, SD card slots, battery (# of cells, hours of life) WiFi and type (A/B/G/N), type of available ports, monitor out, etc?

This Will Make A Great Little Car Computer. (or Handbag for women) Use at Free Hotspots: Starbucks, McDonalds, Library, Panera Bread, Barn & Noble, Borders, Hotel Lobby, Airport, etc. Since hotpots are not very secure, I wouldnt have a problem using this. Teen: If you only have one main computer in the house, your teen may like this too (better than nothing).

Youtube doesn't play from Youtube.com. There is a YouTube application on the desktop. You can search and play youtube video in Normal or High Quality versions. The youtubes play in the Windows Media Player.
(( Also Does Not Play Flash in Webpages))

(This is better than I expected) (I Actually Like This Little Mini-Netbook. It's pretty fast and responsive. Windows CE 6.0 professional plus is much faster than the older Windows CE 5.0 units tested on Youtube. (Not super fast, Just faster than I expected) Works Best on Mobile Websites - Like most computers, it has a hard time loading graphic rich sites. Some sites automatically send you to their mobile site. Others, you'll have to search.

SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE WFI (WiFi DOES NOT WORK)Yesterday, I used this Mini Computer with the Ethernet plugged in. It worked just fine. Today I decided to test the WiFi. It just does not work. Even sitting next to my old computer: On Old Computer: Wifi is working just fine. On Mini Netbook: NoFi. I can find the wifi signal and connect. But no juice to my browser (or any other intenet application i.e. YouTube player)

I FOUND 236 BAD REVIEWS FROM ACTUAL PURCHASERS ON EBAY.

SORRY DEAR BABY NETBOOK. I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE YOU. TOLD FRIENDS YOU WERE COOL. NOW I LOOK LIKE A FOOL. IF YOU CAN NOT HANDLE SIMPLE WIFI, I'M GONNA PACK YOU UP AND TAKE YOU BACK HOME (To CVS).

Congratulations on discovering the downside to cheap Chinese netbooks and tablets on eBay, DealExtreme, etc. If you have a problem, and these things have quality issues that vary from production run to production run, then you are pretty much just out your money unless you can fix it yourself. If you had spent the few extra bucks at CVS, you could have just exchanged it locally if you got one with a bad WiFi card.

BTW, have you looked for an updated WiFi driver for this thing? You might want to check out www.slatedroid.com for WinCE drivers or help.

I FOUND THE FIX TO MY WIRELESS (WIFI) PROBLEM On The CVS Mini Netbook
MY WIFI WAS SET TO USE WPA2 ENCRIPTION. Apparently, this Mini Netbook has a hard time encrypting the higher ‘WPA2 ‘ level Wifi security. So I moved my WiFi security down to the lower ‘WPA’ encryption level and it worked. (happiness)

Here are the steps I used to get the WiFi working: (5 minutes max) .. 1. Set my WiFi router to WPA 2. Click the "WiFi Power" button on the desktop 3. Click "WiFi On" (when the button reads "Power Off" then the Wifi is on. 4. Click OK. A little icon appears in Left Corner of the System Tray [bottom right]. 5. Click the little icon [looks like a little TV] [you should see IP, subnet, Gateway information filled in] 6. Click the "Wireless Information Tab at top right" you should see you wireless device in box 7. click on your wireless device. ..Encryption: TKIP, ..Authentication: WPA-PSK, ..Network Key (enter your key) 8. click OK and you're done. Now Shutdown your computer and Restart. 8. Click "WiFi On" / Power On / (little TV icon reappears in System Tray. You Should Be set to go. [ green TV box} now open the browser or YouTube Search Window. Note: you may also need to set your WifF to 'G' (not 'N'). Hope this helps some of you struggling to get the WiFi working.
.

Hi_ I want to get one of these for my daughter-Will it play download game sites like Pixie Hollow or Toontown? What about non-download flash game sites like Disneychannel.com?

alldaygirl1 said: Hi_ I want to get one of these for my daughter-Will it play download game sites like Pixie Hollow or Toontown? What about non-download flash game sites like Disneychannel.com?

no, unfortunately, it will not. you would need a "real" computer, not this limited web-browsing toy.
ps. i'm posting from one right now.
